Nauticam Supermacro Converter 1 (SMC-1) M67
Description
What is Nauticam Supermacro Converter (the NSC)
We utilize a revolutionary approach in developing the NSC. We incorporate the camera lens inside the housing/port, the port glass, and the water surrounding the entire ‘system’ as individual optical elements in designing and optimizing the NSC. The optical property of all these elements are carefully considered and taken into calculation during the design process.
The NSC consists of a group of lenses, housed in a marine grade anodized aluminum barrel, which is designed to be mounted in front of a port, and converts the system to a high magnification underwater photographing system, while preserving most of the optical quality of the camera lens such as resolution and contrast etc.
It is designed and optimized for using with 60mm to 100/105mm 1:1 macro lenses with internal focusing capability in the DX and FX format.
When combined with a full frame camera and a 100mm/105mm macro lens, the NSC converts the system to provide 1.3X to 2.3X magnification factor. In other words, a minimum subject area of 15.6mm X 10.4mm will fill the whole frame of a 36mm X 24mm sensor.
Uncompromised optical quality
The NSC is developed through hundreds of engineering hours utilizing computer software and built with lenses of special formulated glasses optically grinded to high precision. It effectively reduces normal optical issues such as chromatic aberrations, coma, spherical aberration, and field deformation etc. associated with underwater macro photography using magnifying lenses.
Improved sharpness and Contrast
As the NSC is optimized explicitly for using together with a macro lens for underwater photography, images captured exhibit exceptional sharpness compared with conventional solutions using stacked magnifying lenses in achieving the same magnification factor. Thanks to the wide band multi-layer anti-reflection coating on each surface of the lenses, images also exhibit very good and pleasing contrast.
Ample Working Distance
With a typical full frame camera and a 100mm/105mm macro lens, the NSC converts the system to 1.3X magnification macro system when focused at a subject 95- 100mm in front of the NSC; and to 2.3X magnification when focused to 50-55mm in front of it.
Superb Light Transmission
All the lens elements installed inside the NSC are optically optimized to appropriate diameters so as to provide maximum light transmission. Hence, the NSC doesn’t encounter vignette issue under most extreme conditions. The wide band multi- layer anti-reflection coating on all surfaces also greatly improves light transmission.
Optimized for Autofocus
By utilizing certain specially developed algorithm in the optimization process, the NSC renders superior image quality over the full focusing range of the camera lens
(which becomes ~50 to ~100 mm in front of the NSC). Also benefitting from the high brightness and contrast of the image, the autofocus system of the camera usually works acceptably well within this range.
High Resolution
One of the design intent of the NSC is to provide a high resolution means to underwater photographers experiencing supermacro territory. This has been achieved by utilizing computer aided optimization and specially picked glasses of unique refractive and dispersion properties. We are impressed by the images taken during our field tests. It has been observed that these images, in many cases, are comparable to those taken on land with the same magnification.
Smooth Bokeh
As the NSC restores the optical property of the camera lens nicely, the blurred (out of focus) background has a pleasing smoothness and creamy look, without the normal purple or green fringing.
Avoiding Diffraction
With the overall superior optical performance, it is not necessary to stop down the camera lens excessively for achieving good image quality. This greatly helps avoid reaching diffraction limit of the camera lens.
