Nauticam NA-R3 Housing for Canon R3 Camera
Along with the Sony A1 and Nikon Z9, the Canon R3 is one of the most exciting new cameras of the year in the world of underwater photography. All three cameras represent the culmination of each manufacturer's technological developments combined in a professional-level mirrorless hybrid body. The R3 raises the performance level of the features that make Canon a popular choice among underwater users, such as Dual Pixel AF and top-notch video recording specs, while delivering outstanding still image quality.

Introduction to the Canon EOS R3 camera
The Canon EOS R3 appears to be the mirrorless sibling of the 1DX Mark III DSLR in every way. It performs many of the same tasks and adds a few extra features through the use of the electronic viewfinder and larger RF lens mount. The full-frame 24.1MP stacked CMOS sensor not only has incredible low-light performance, but can also shoot full-width 6K video in both raw and compressed formats at up to 60 frames per second. The R3 features Canon's industry-leading Dual Pixel AF system with 100% field coverage and the now-revived Eye AF system.
Dual Pixel AF II
Canon's Dual Pixel autofocus system has long been a favorite among underwater photographers, especially when it comes to capturing subjects. The R3 adds an additional mode for animal detection that could make the system even more reliable when tracking moving subjects. Field of view coverage is 100% with 1053 zones to ensure accurate focusing no matter where the subject is located.
Low-light performance
The ability to increase a camera's ISO without major sacrifice is critical for underwater photographers in both stills and video, as higher aperture shots provide sharper corners and slower shutter speeds mean less motion blur. Higher video frame rates are also beneficial, as the photographer can maintain a 180° shutter without compromising aperture values. When using color correction filters, which can often remove more than a full stop of light, compensation via ISO is not as important to overall image quality. Maintaining dynamic range even at high ISO values is also important for shooting in natural light or under poor water conditions.
Improved controls
The R3 has an additional control wheel located on the top right of the back of the camera that doubles as a mode control. This wheel can be assigned a variety of functions, such as ISO, and is adjusted via a dedicated control wheel on the body within easy reach of the right grip.
Video Capabilities
The Canon R3 can record 6K video at up to 60 frames per second, either in raw or compressed format. 6K recording uses the full sensor width, which means no loss of field of view. 12-bit 6K shooting is possible in both uncompressed Canon Raw and compressed Raw-Light formats. 10-bit H.265 is also possible, in both HDR-PQ and Canon Log3 gamma curves, to maximize dynamic range for post-processing while maintaining smaller file sizes than in Raw format. It is also possible (when using supported cards) to simultaneously record 10-bit 4:2:2 DCI 4K 60p video. For those who want higher frame rates, 10-bit 4:2:2 compressed 4K/120fps can also be recorded, downsampled from the full sensor width. A natively sampled 4K S35 crop is also an option, allowing for greater magnification or the use of APS-C lenses. The R3 also outputs a clean 6K signal over HDMI via an HDMI micro-type D connector. Direct custom white balance in Live View is also now possible, making an important feature for underwater video even easier.
Stabilization
The R3 features 5-axis in-body image stabilization (IBIS) that provides up to 8 stops of correction for even smoother video and less blur.
Large electronic viewfinder
The R3's EVF is a 5.76 million pixel OLED screen and features an OVF simulation mode that takes advantage of the OLED screen's wide dynamic range to reproduce a scene as it would look through an optical viewfinder. The lower dynamic range of electronic viewfinders has always made them difficult to use underwater, especially in high contrast or backlit conditions. This feature can be easily turned on and off by assigning it to a custom function button. When using the electronic shutter, which has an X-Sync speed of 1/180 sec, the EVF allows true "no-blackout" shooting at up to 30 frames per second.
The Nauticam NA-R3 underwater housing
The Nauticam NA-R3 professional aluminum underwater housing for the Canon EOS R3 full-frame mirrorless camera is a true hybrid shooting solution, just like the R3 itself. Nauticam has continuously supported both Canon's professional DSLR lineup and the growing full-frame mirrorless RF mount cameras with innovative underwater housings, and the new NA-R3 is the combination of all these technologies. The new NA-R3 is a combination of all these technologies. By combining elements of our 1D Series housings with those of the R Series, the NA-R3 will be the highest performing housing for the R3 on the market.
Mission Control
Nauticam engineers design each housing to place the controls where they are needed most, and to make them easy to reach in a natural hand position. The NA-R3 features large knurled knobs for the main and sub commands, as well as an additional shoulder knob for the R3's customizable control wheel. A fourth control wheel near the front of the left grip can move the ring of the optional EF-to-RF lens adapter when using EF lenses. On the right side are a double thumb lever for Record and AF-ON, and single levers for M-Fn and Fn2. A lever on the left side operates the Pv control, which switches between exposure preview and OVF simulation modes on the EVF. Another double thumb lever on the left side is used for playback and magnification.
HDMI 2.0 and mounting points
The R3 can output clean 6K 60p via HDMI, and the NA-R3 has a large-hole M24 bulkhead to support an HDMI 2.0 connection to an external monitor or recorder. Mounting the monitor or recorder or other accessories is made even easier with 3 1/4"-20 mounting holes and an additional M10 mounting point on the chassis. See the Resources sidebar for supported monitor/recorder housings and recommended accessories.
Flash triggering
Flash triggering can be accomplished via the two included M14 electronic bulkheads (one is pre-installed in the M24 bulkhead via a removable M26-M14 adapter). When using fiber optic triggering, the built-in fiber optic cables can be used with the optional manual LED or TTL flash triggers to provide the desired type of flash power control.
Professional Premium Optics
The NA-R3 is based on the N120 Canon RF mount port system, which supports a wide range of Canon RF mount lenses with a choice of optical glass and acrylic ports. Because lenses can be detached for both EF and RF-mount lenses, the NA-R3 can support both lens ports without modifications to the body. The EF-RF lens adapter is housed in the body and allows the N120 Canon EF mount port system to be used without additional extension rings. When switching between an EF and RF lens, the camera must be removed to install or remove the adapter. The Nauticam line of premium professional optics offers unparalleled optical quality and expanded creative possibilities. When paired with the Canon RF 14-35 F/4 IL USM lens, the WACP-2 provides an impressive 140º field of view while delivering an incredibly natural-looking image and excellent corner sharpness. The SMC-1 delivers 2.3x macro magnification for the RF 100mm macro lens, while the SMC-2 delivers 3.3x.
Vacuum check and leak detection system
The electronics for the Nauticam Vacuum Check and Leak Detection System are pre-installed in the enclosure, so only the optional M16 Vacuum Valve (25625) is required. This monitoring system provides continuous information on the watertight and submersible condition of the enclosure. A simple color-coded LED light system indicates to the user that the vacuum is stable or that the housing is losing vacuum. Leak detection is integrated into the same circuitry so that an audible and visual signal sounds when water is present. The Nauticam system is temperature compensated, so false alarms due to changes in outside temperature or the camera heating up during an action-packed dive are avoided.
