The best Nikon tech in a light, fully loaded body

No other manufacturer makes professional functionality so accessible. Ikelite housings are designed from the ground up to allow full camera control and connection of an external flash, right out of the box. Advanced features such as TTL lighting and improved magnification viewfinders are available as needed.

Ikelite's DL series lens ports are optimized to be the lightest on the market and provide excellent image quality. The materials used for the housings and lens ports are selected for maximum durability and corrosion resistance while minimizing travel weight and cost.

Lens ports

This underwater camera housing features Ikelite's robust Dry Lock (DL) connection system. “Dry Lock” refers to the placement of the O-ring on the outside of the connection socket. This improves visibility and reduces the likelihood of water dripping onto your valuable camera sensor. The DL ports are the lightest on the market, yet sturdy and able to withstand rough surf. Attachment is quick and secure. A system of extensions can accommodate a wide variety of lenses with ease.

Most popular zoom lenses and selected lens focus rings can be snapped into place via a simple gear, allowing adjustment with your fingertips. A large soft-touch knob on the side of the housing makes fine adjustments a breeze. Zoom and focus gears vary depending on the lens used. Zoom gears are sold separately.

Vacuum system

The included vacuum valve allows you to pressurize the housing to check for leaks before putting your expensive equipment in the water. Use of the vacuum valve requires a compatible vacuum pump with pressure gauge #47011, which is included.

There is no greater security than being able to see your camera and O-ring seal through the back of the housing. Our signature open groove design allows the rear O-ring to hang in a natural position that is easier to maintain and more reliable than forcing the O-ring into a channel. Once the housing is closed, you can see the O-ring forming a solid, watertight seal.

M16 accessory port

The additional M16 threaded accessory port provides a mounting point for third-party accessories, including HDMI bulkheads.

With the USB-C charging and data transfer port, you can dive all week without having to open the housing.

TTL exposure

With this housing, you can flash manually or add TTL electronics depending on your application. The included manual hot shoe with Ikelite ICS-5 bulkhead supports manual flash exposure with a variety of flashes, including Ikelite, SEA&SEA, INON, and others.

With the DL1 DS Link TTL converter #46054 and a compatible Ikelite DS flash, you can enjoy the fastest and most accurate TTL exposure on the market. The DL1 supports rear curtain synchronization and exposure compensation can be added or subtracted in the camera.

Controls and setup

The shutter release and AF-ON lever feature super-sensitive and natural-feeling curved levers. Both controls can be extended with the optional Shutter Release Extension #4077.95 for more comfortable operation when using a right-side quick-release handle.

All push-button controls are made of milled and hard-anodized aluminum to reduce weight and prevent salt deposits. The rear of the housing features laser-engraved operating symbols that will never fade or fall off.

The camera mount is front-facing for easy installation and removal. A small mounting plate is attached to the bottom of the camera and secured to the front of the housing. The camera mounting plate does not need to be removed from the camera to use it on the surface or to change the battery or memory cards. The mounting plate has a 1/4-20 thread on the bottom so it can be attached to a tripod on the surface.

Viewfinder

The included Super Eye Viewfinder provides an improved view of the camera's optical viewfinder when viewed through a diving mask. The viewfinder can be quickly and easily removed to attach an optional straight magnified viewfinder (Type 2) # 6890.1 or a 45° magnified viewfinder (Type 3) # 6891.3. The angle of the 45° viewfinder is more ergonomic for underwater shooting and provides a larger and brighter view than the standard Super Eye.

Handling and transport

The housing, tray, and handles have been optimized to reduce weight while maintaining strength and durability. The right-side quick-release handle # 4077.02 (sold separately) can be added or removed as needed. The precision-machined aluminum base features 1/4-20 tripod mounting sockets and additional mounting options for future accessories. The base and handle can be quickly removed when the system needs to be disassembled for transport.

A 1/4-20 thread is located at the front and center of the housing above the lens mount. You can attach lightweight accessories such as a focus light or GoPro camera to this mount.

If you are shooting with two strobe or lighting arms, a top handle can be attached to carry the camera to and from the dive site. Top handles are available as cable handle # 4080.09 or aluminum top handle # 4080.08. The rigid aluminum version provides additional mounting points for lighting and accessories.

It is highly recommended that a dedicated focus light be mounted on the top bracket or strobe arm to improve autofocus in low light conditions.

Construction

Our new ABS-PC composite front is durable, offers better contrast and visibility, keeps your camera cooler in the sun, and is significantly lighter than aluminum alternatives.

Each housing is manufactured in the USA, individually tested for fit, and water pressure tested to 60 m.

Non-Ikelite flash units

SEA&SEA, INON, and Retra flash units with an electrical connection can be triggered in manual exposure mode using an electrical sync cable. Strobes without an electrical sync connection cannot be connected to this system unless they are controlled by a hard-wired strobe.

Non-digital flash units from Ikelite

Older non-digital strobes equipped with an ICS-5 electrical sync cable connection can be used with this system in manual exposure modes.

Fiber optic (light guide cable)

Only fiber optic-triggered flashes are not compatible with this system. An external flash must be connected via an electrical sync cable.

Remote triggering

Flash units with remote slave capability can be triggered by a flash unit connected to the housing via an electrical sync cable. Ikelite DS flash units support remote triggering with the Optical Slave Converter # 4405 or the Water Wizard System (manufactured and sold by Aquatica).

Compatibility

This housing is only compatible with Nikon Z8 cameras as shipped from the manufacturer. Unless otherwise specified, this housing is not suitable for use with accessory grips, battery grips, eyepieces, LCD covers, or other accessories.

Due to differences in the placement of lenses and controls, other camera models cannot be used in this housing or adapted to it. We are not aware of any other models that can be used in this housing or adapted to it.
